The takahē
The takahē had been formally declared extinct in the late nineteenth century, devastated by the arrival of the animals that European settlers brought with them such as cats, rats and ferrets.
In the mid-20th century, they were rediscovered, and their numbers are now at about 500, growing at about 8% a year.
